City may allow ATVs on streets

PLEASANT VIEW -- Police Chief Scott Jackson said he would not have a problem with making it legal to use ATVs on city streets as long as they meet city and county requirements.

Jackson said because Pleasant View has a small population, approval of ATVs on city streets may be possible. He added that if the council were to approve an ordinance, the vehicles would have to be licensed, street-legal and obey all motor vehicle laws.

"Some of the bigger side-by-side ones are like Jeeps anyway," Mayor Doug Clifford said.

"If they are legally licensed, then why not?" said Councilman Todd Walker. "I don't think we want a bunch of unlicensed vehicles (on the streets), but if they put out the effort to get them licensed ..."

City Administrator J.J. Allen said he would look into the issue and study ordinances from other cities.
