Sheriff's office IDs woman in fatal Willard Canyon fall

WILLARD -- The Box Elder County Sheriff's Office has identified Laney Peacock, 19, as the woman who fell to her death in Willard Canyon on Saturday.

The Brigham City woman was hiking with a friend when they decided to climb up a sheer rock wall without the proper equipment, said Box Elder County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Kevin Potter. As Peacock started to climb back down, authorities say, she slipped and fell about 30 feet, hitting a rocky area, then slid another 100 yards.

Her friend ran for help and found someone with a cell phone at the mouth of the canyon, 800 yards from where she fell.

But she was dead when rescuers found her. A helicopter was used to hoist Peacock's body out of the canyon.
