I had read an article in Harpers "Easy chair: A letter to Barack Obama" by George McGovern. It presents the idea of bringing home the troops from the Middle East as well as from Korea and Europe--all good and logical ideas. Do people know that in 1963, the defense budget for $51 billion? And yet, neither China nor Russia threatens us.
Others have tried and failed to work their will in Afghanistan, such as Alexander the Great, the Mongols, the British and the Russians.
What is wrong with the U.S.? Maybe if it were to learn from other more formidable forces that were unable to conquer a country, it would be more worthy of what its supposed to represent, that is to allow the freedom to choose their own destiny, just like we did. This idea could also erase our unnecessary overspending.
