BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Utah -- A lightning strike has killed a German man at Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah.
Park officials say 51-year-old Volker Kunz of Hamm, Germany, died Thursday afternoon after he sought shelter under a large ponderosa pine during a thunderstorm.
They say lightning struck the tree he was standing under and its energy was transferred to him.
He was taken by ambulance to Garfield Memorial Hospital in Panguitch, but attempts to revive him failed.
Park officials say Kunz and his family were on the Rim Trail between Sunrise and Sunset points when the rapidly approaching thunderstorm prompted them to begin returning to their vehicle.
Kunz is survived by his wife and two sons.
The last lightning-caused fatality in the park was in 2004.
