SALT LAKE CITY -- The public is invited to view the restored "Mormon Meteor" and other historic race cars in a celebration honoring the driver who pioneered Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats as the "Fastest Place on Earth."

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon will unveil the historic car during a ceremony honoring David Abbott "Ab" Jenkins on Wednesday night at the Rose Wagner Theater.

Jenkins was mayor of Salt Lake City from 1940-1944.

Wednesday's celebration precedes Friday's theatrical premiere of "Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt." The new documentary film profiles racing and the life of Jenkins, who died in 1956.

The movie tells the story of the man who set out to break every existing land speed and endurance record.
