Early morning fire destroys car port and four vehicles

OGDEN -- Residents of the 900 block of 29th Street awoke in the early hours of Wednesday morning to find a car port in flame.

The freestanding garage sat west of the multi-family dwelling at 986 29 St., Ogden Fire Department Deputy Chief Chad Tucker said.

Ogden, South Ogden and Weber Fire District fire departments responded to the fire with about 20 personnel handling at least three engines, two ladders and ambulance.

Resident Lucrecia Altalirano said she awoke to the knocking of a neighbor at about 3 a.m. warning her to get out of her apartment.

"When we finally go out everything was on fire," Altalirano said. "We heard some loud booms. The kids were scared. It was horrible."

Altalirano said her and her husband lost a pickup truck, a Volkswagen Jetta and other belongings in the fire. The fire destroyed a van and another passenger car as well.

Fire crews quickly contained the fire, Altalirano said, but had to contend with downed power lines, which limited access to the fire.

The fire department allowed the residents to return to the three apartments once the fire was put out.

However, the surrounding area was without electricity throughout the morning. Crews from Rocky Mountain Power worked to fix the down line.

Neither firefighters or residents reported any injuries.

The fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damages to the carport and vehicles, Tucker said.

The Ogden City Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire at this time.
