WEST WENDOVER, Nev. -- Police are investigating after an Amtrak train plowed into an empty vehicle that had stalled on a pair of West Wendover train tracks.
Authorities say emergency dispatchers were trying to reach Union Pacific Railroad and Amtrak personnel around 2 a.m. Thursday to warn them about the stranded car when an eastbound train hit the vehicle and pushed it about a quarter-mile down the track.
KTVX-TV reports (http://bit.ly/o7Yeyl ) the car was a total loss.
Railroad maintenance crews helped pull the vehicle from the tracks. The train had minor damage but continued on its way.
No passengers were hurt. Police say the 29-year-old West Wendover man who had been driving the abandoned car returned to the scene and cooperated with investigators.
