Police vehicle damaged after chase and crash

CLEARFIELD — A hit-and-run accident turned into a police chase on Thursday morning that ended with a Davis County Sheriff vehicle head-first into a pole.

“Everybody is fine, luckily,” said Clearfield Lt. Adam Malan. “Davis County has a hurt vehicle and there’s a damaged fence and sign, but other than that there’s no injuries.”

At 7 a.m., Clearfield officers arrived at the parking lot of Maverik gas station at 709 South State following a hit-and-run accident. The officers quickly noticed the suspect vehicle, which had been reported as possibly stolen. The officers attempted to pull the copper color Kia over as the vehicle traveled westbound on 1700 South at 200 East; however, a chase ensued.

Clearfield officers lost sight of the vehicle momentarily as the chase went through the Freeport Center. That was when a Davis County deputy joined in the hunt. The deputy initiated a pursuit on the suspect vehicle at 1700 South near the entrance/exit of Freeport Center. The chase continued westbound on 1700 South and ended in the parking lot of the Aspen Park apartment complex where police apprehended an adult male suspect in the passenger side of the vehicle and an adult female suspect, reported as the driver, was found hiding inside the Aspen Park apartment building.

One of the Davis County deputies involved in the chase crashed into a sign at the entrance of Aspen Park apartments.

Police found miscellaneous credit cards and checks in the suspects’ possession and plan to continue the investigation to determine why the suspects fled and if the suspects were involved in any other criminal activity.
