Police warn of spike in money scams

SOUTH SALT LAKE -- The South Salt Lake Police Department is warning residents about a spike in money fraud scams over the past week that usually involves phone calls from distant area codes.

South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller says some scams tell callers they've won a large sum of money but ask them to send a check to pay taxes on the winnings.

Others involve a caller claiming to be a family member asking for cash.

Officers warn that if a claim seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Residents who get a suspicious call are asked to hang up and call police.
