Utah soldier receives posthumous Silver Star

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- A Fort Campbell soldier killed in Afghanistan has been awarded a Silver Star posthumously, with his family accepting the honor in his stead.

Maj. Gen. James McConville, 101st Airborne Division Commander, on Thursday presented the honor to the family of Pfc. Jordan Matthew Byrd of Grantsville, Utah, who died Oct. 13, 2010 after being hit by small arms fire in eastern Afghanistan.

Byrd was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion "Red Currahees," 506th Infantry Regiment.

McConville presented three copies of the honor, one to Byrd's wife, Savanah, and 11 month-old son, Ayden; one to his mother, Roberta Pitt, and one to his father, Justin Brost, The Leaf-Chronicle reported. (http://bit.ly/mVCzFL ).

Crew Chief Staff Sgt. Christopher Hansen says Byrd, 19, died while applying a tourniquet to another soldier.
