PROMONTORY -- Box Elder County firefighters were battling a large wildfire Wednesday night on the north end of the Promontory Mountains.
The call came in about 7:36 p.m. that a wildfire was burning in the mountains, dispatchers said.
Two hours later, early estimates from the air attack crews put the fire at 1,000 acres, said Jason Curry, of the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
High winds were driving the wildfire and causing it to spread "really, really quickly," he said.
The fire was believed to have been caused by lightning, he said.
It was also unclear if the fire was a threat to any structures.
"There are some ranch buildings in the general area. Since it is dark, it's kind of hard to say for sure" if there are any in the vicinity of the fire, he said.
Firefighters from several agencies in Box Elder County, including Brigham City, Tremonton and Thatcher, responded to the fire.
