Standard-Examiner Readers' Open is upon us

Does it seem like the summer is coming to a close way too quickly?

Well, before you put away all the summer toys, here are a couple of events to plan for.

The Standard-Examiner 2011 Readers' Open golf tournament is set for Sept. 9 at Mount Ogden Golf Course. Proceeds benefit the Standard-Examiner's Newspaper in Education program.

To sign up, call Trudy Peterson at 801-625-4425.

The next day -- Sept. 10 -- Top of Utah runners will gather at Layton Commons Park for The Classic race. The popular 5K and 10K run/walks as well as the Kids K races always prove to be a fun fall family event.

While not an official Standard-Examiner event any more, the race got its start with the newspaper and still benefits heart services at McKay-Dee Hospital Center.

For more information visit www.theclassicrace.blogspot.com or call race director Jeremy Holt at 801-387-7754.

Good causes, both of them.

Tailgate plans

The University of Utah is going bigtime, and plans to expand its tailgate options for home football games this season. The Pit has added 27 spaces, while U Tailgate Alley will make its debut on Oct. 1 for Utah's inaugural Pac-12 home game vs. Washington.

Spaces in both the Pit -- open since 2009 -- and U Tailgate Alley (RV and tents) are available for purchase. For information, call 801-587-9894.
