WEST HAVEN -- Where there's smoke, it may just be a controlled burn, fire officials say.
That's what happened Saturday in West Haven. Several residents called 911 about 1:45 p.m. to report a grass fire at 5125 S. 750 West after seeing a large column of black smoke billowing into the sky.
When Weber Fire District crews arrived, they could tell it was a controlled burn, said Capt. Rich Cooper. He said the owner of the field had a burn permit, so the burn was legal. The farmer had two tractors and a truck with a water tank on the scene to control the burn.
