Shooting suspect Nance waives hearing

FARMINGTON -- A 28-year-old man accused of shooting his father has waived a preliminary hearing.

Joseph Allen Nance recently appeared in 2nd District Court. He is charged with first-degree felony murder and third-degree felony possession of a handgun.

Both charges stem from the shooting death of 52-year-old Gregory Nance at the Far West Motel in Kaysville on March 19.

A felony arraignment hearing is set for Sept. 26 before Judge John Morris.

Nance is being held in Davis County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. Police said Gregory Nance had kicked his ex-wife and their son out of the motel after they had been living with him for about a month. Joseph Nance then went back to the motel and shot his father multiple times.

Nance admitted to shooting his father and claimed self-defense, police said. Police have not found the gun.
