LDS Church plans temple groundbreaking in Payson

SALT LAKE CITY -- Mormon church officials say they will hold an October groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a new temple in Payson.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Saints says the public ceremony will be held Oct. 8.

Senior church elder Dallin H. Oaks of the faith's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside over the festivities.

The Payson temple will be 15th temple either operating or planned in Utah.

Church officials say the temple will serve about 78,000 church members living in the area between Spanish Fork and Nephi.

Temples are considered sacred to Latter-day Saints and are used for religious rituals including proxy baptisms, marriage ceremonies and other rites designed to strengthen church teachings.
