SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's congressional delegation is asking U.S. Interior Department Secretary Ken Salazar to allow wilderness in the state to be managed locally.
In a letter sent this week to Salazar, the delegation says that in large part, Utah officials prefer a locally-driven approach to determining land use on public land in the state.
The letter was sent in response to a letter Salazar sent each member in June asking the delegation to identify federally-managed public lands in Utah where there is strong support for permanent protection. Salazar's letter asked the congressional members if they believe any lands are ready for designation as protected wilderness by Congress.
Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz says a county-by-county process is already under way in the state aimed at resolving land-use issues.
