DENVER -- The family of a 17-year-old girl whose legs were severed when she tried to hop a moving freight train says she is awake at a hospital and understands the extent of her injuries.
The family of Anna Beninati released the statement Friday through Denver Health, where Beninati is listed in serious condition. Authorities say Beninati and three male friends were going to Fort Collins when she tried to hop the train Monday in Longmont.
Longmont police Cmdr. Jeff Satur tells the Times-Call (http://goo.gl/1W1Xg ) that Beninati seems in good spirits and is joking with her siblings and the hospital. Satur says the family from Sandy, Utah, plans to return home soon so Beninati can begin her rehabilitation.
Beninati was attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
