Romney endorses Hatch

SALT LAKE CITY -- Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is endorsing Orrin Hatch of Utah in the senator's bid for a seventh term in the U.S. Senate.

Romney says Monday that Hatch is in a prime position to help the country because of his seniority in the Senate, including his position as the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee.

The 77-year-old Hatch says he will continue to focus on limited government if he is re-elected.

Hatch and Romney are both members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hatch has previously endorsed Romney for president.

Hatch is facing opposition from conservative groups such as FreedomWorks, which is actively looking for a Republican candidate to challenge Hatch.

Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah is also considering a potential Senate race in 2012.
