WSU history author to speak Saturday

OGDEN -- The American Association of University Women of Greater Ogden will sponsor a presentation by Weber State University History Chairwoman Susan Matt from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Ogden Golf and Country Club.

Matt will present her new book, "Homesickness in American History," soon to be published by Oxford University Press ($29.95).

The public is welcome. Those wishing to have brunch at the event may make reservations by calling Ogden AAUW President Joan Effiong at 801-621-5037.

Matt will give a PowerPoint presentation detailing "the profound pain felt by Americans on the move, from the country's founding to the present."

Matt will show how colonists in Jamestown longed for and often returned to England.

African Americans during the Great Migration yearned for their Southern homes, and immigrants nursed memories of Sicily and Guadalajara.

Matt said: "In the age of helicopter parents and boomerang kids, Americans continue to assert the significance of home ties."
