WEST VALLEY CITY -- Prosecutors say four officers were justified in using deadly force against an armed robbery suspect who led police on a high-speed car chase in June that left two officers wounded.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sam Gill on Monday exonerated West Valley Detective John Dietrich, West Valley Officer Levi Lloyd, West Valley Officer Josh Fife, and Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Marble.
Police shot and killed 31-year-old Jesus Florentino Merino June 24 near a mall in West Valley City.
They say Merino opened fire as officers tried to pull him over. He was wanted for an alleged kidnapping of a taxi driver and suspected in at least two robberies.
The coroner removed 14 bullets from Florentino's body.
Gill said officers reasonably believed they could die if they didn't use force.
