SALT LAKE CITY -- A homeless man has been ordered to serve probation after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of stalking LDS Church president Thomas S. Monson.
Third District Court Judge Randall Skanchy on Monday ordered Benjamin Tucker Staples to stay at least 1,000 feet away from the church's office building. Skanchy also ordered a mental evaluation.
Staples was charged in July after police were called to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Church Office Building in Salt Lake City on a report of a trespasser.
Officials say the 36-year-old Staples had been to the building about five times since late June asking to speak with Monson. Staff had asked him to leave each time but he refused.
Court documents show Staples sometimes refers to himself as Jesus Christ.
