(UNEDITED)In reference to a 13 Sep letter "Bible: Republicans wrong in not helping poor". I thought about this very same subject many times over the years. So much so that a few years back I had written the LDS President Gordon B. Hinkley a letter concerning this very matter. At the time I considered him to be a very honest and caring person and thought I would get a sincere and truthful reply to my letter. I received no reply what so ever. As a result, I lost some respect for your prophet. I felt he would give a worthwhile reply defending the LDS views on this. I was wrong.
To address Mike F's reply to the editorial letter; No one, to include us bleeding heart liberals are for giving stuff away by the federal or state government programs, except in emergency situations.
Furthermore, my observations over the years has proven to me that the first persons in line for all of the government handouts are the common working Republicans. They seem to analyze the various programs and abuse it to a degree it is virtually a freebee for them They have the government pay for the college educations for their several children. They are hypocritical on this matter, as I'm sure in most cases they are against a program that would grant money for all others to get a college education.
Our children with our help paid for every penny of their college education. Not one government red cent of help. We didn't expect any.
Most government programs aren't meant to be free stuff. They are meant to assist or give a helping hand. It's when extreme abuse of such programs by both hypocritical Republicans and Democrats that makes it appear as if it is free stuff.
There is some free stuff however; but it is to assist on a temporary basis for those in desperate need. Such as food stamps, medicare, etc. This is where I differ from the Republican Party, I believe that our government should play a role in giving a helping hand to the less fortunate.
I also believe, if anyone frauds, steals or in any other way criminally receives money from our government that they should spend some serious time in a real prison, not a country club prison. It should be the same for all white collar criminals. A lot of people suffer because of their reckless actions.
