LAYTON -- The new Dick's Sporting Goods store is finally open, and the new store manager says, the one at Layton Hills Mall is significantly different from the store at the Gateway in Salt Lake City.
"We look totally different," said Jessica Pierce, store manager at the new Dick's Sporting Goods. "We're all on the same team, but we're more of a neighborhood store and they're a downtown store."
The Layton location is the retailer's second store in Utah and its 457th nationwide.
After watching the change in appearance to the outside of the mall, sporting goods enthusiasts are finally allowed take a peek at the changes on the inside.
Dick's Sporting Goods held a ribbon- cutting ceremony on Friday morning and had a steady stream of customers throughout the morning hours.
"This is not only a new day for the mall, but it also represents the start of the economic recovery of retail in Layton and Northern Utah as well," said Ben Hart, Layton's economic development specialist. "What's going to take place after this and as a result of this make it more exciting."
As the mall continues to make changes, including an upcoming announcement about two new restaurants that will be built in the parking lot near Dick's Sporting Goods, shoppers are enjoying the additions.
"The store is very inviting as you enter, and it's just a welcome addition to what can be found in Layton," said Mayor Steve Curtis. "I believe we're seeing the Top of Utah become a place where everything can be found, so the property owners of the mall obviously know and understand that and have made a huge investment in upgrading their property."
The store held its soft opening on Wednesday and has special guests planned for this weekend. Former BYU basketball player Jimmer Fredette, who was drafted by the Sacramento Kings, will be at the store from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today. The Jazz Bear mascot will appear from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Real Salt Lake's Nat Borchers and Tony Beltran plan to visit with shoppers from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
"We have opened several stores across the nation and with each comes a new adventure," said Agustin Pineyrua, senior community marketing manager at Dick's Sporting Goods. "We're excited to expand our presence in Utah and expect to be here for a long time and have an impact in the community."
Pineyrua said that the store is basically a bunch of small shops under the same roof. Those small shops offer a broad assortment of brand-name sporting goods equipment, apparel and footwear.
Both Pineyrua and Pierce said the store is going to play a big role in the community, and the employees not only share a passion for outdoors and sports with their customers but also want to help the customers enjoy that passion.
"This store is going to bring the best customer service anyone has ever seen," Pierce said.
