Bicycle thieves target West Point school

WEST POINT -- Lakeside Elementary School has been targeted by bike thieves in the past week, deputies said.

Between six and 10 bicycles left in the school's bike racks at 2941 W. 800 North in West Point have been stolen during school hours since Sept. 13, Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen said.

Officers found only one bike -- in the field behind the school grounds.

Poulsen said some of the bikes were locked up, but thieves cut the chains to take them. Police are asking students who ride bikes to school to continue to lock them up.

Parents also need to write down the serial numbers of the bicycles, "no matter how inexpensive the bikes are," Poulsen said. "It helps with recovery and identification."

She said most of the bicycles were small, "kids bikes, worth maybe $100 to $120, if new."

Anyone with information regarding the stolen bicycles is asked to call 801-451-4150.
