Concert piano being restored for Orem High School

OREM -- A 116-year-old Steinway concert grand piano is being restored after students and alumni helped raise $32,000 to preserve the instrument.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (http://bit.ly/nB3q9C ) the piano was neglected for years after falling into an orchestra pit and was even used as a handyman's workbench.

Orem High School Choral Director Sterling Keyes decided to raise money to save it in 2004 but didn't reach his goal until recently, when school officials contributed the final $4,800.

Keyes says the piano is one of the finest built by Steinway and will be a valuable addition to the high school's music program.

Baldassin Pianos owner Rick Baldassin says after the repairs are made the piano will be valued at $75,000 and can serve for the school for another century.
