Say goodbye to overly tight skirts, sky-high volume hair and heavy makeup. From soft, loose skirts, roomy tops and feather extensions, being green is this fall's black.
Let's take a look at some of the hot trends in back-to-school fashions for this fall of 2011.
Last fall, Chuck Taylor converse sneakers were all the rage. "Chucks" of all colors walked down the halls of the Top of Utah high schools with confidence and comfort.
Although they're still out there, Chucks are quickly being replaced with feel-good, versatile canvas sneakers like Toms and Vans. These two types of shoes are similar with their rubber soles and canvas outsides.
Along with Toms and Vans, strappy leather sandals are big this autumn. They're perfect to transition from fun summer shorts and tanks to fall pants and sleeves. To match the eco-friendly, hippie styles this fall, comfy leather sandals and flats are a must!
Sisterhood of traveling pants
In the past, no self-respecting fashionista would be caught dead without her skinny jeans. Now, however, the skin-tight denim isn't as necessary -- looser boot-cut jeans can now be seen on fashion-forward legs all over the Top of Utah.
Along with styles being more relaxed, the wash and color of pants is also relaxing from blacks and dark blues to lighter hues of blue and even colors such as red, pink, blue, purple and everything in between.
Skirts are making a comeback this fall. Circle skirts and longer hemlines are exactly what every girl needs for a new autumn look. Long maxi skirts add to the flower-child feeling of this fall's fashion. And gone are the days of pencil skirts so tight you can't sit down. Full and fun skirts in a variety of floral, earth tones and Native American-inspired prints are perfect pieces this fall.
The eco-inspired fashions this fall have also carried over into makeup. Earlier this spring, bright rainbow shadows and eyeliners were all the rage. The '80s called, and unfortunately, some of us had to give them back all the neon eyeliners and loud eye shadows.
But this fall, classic bombshell and barely-there makeup are statement pieces that are here to stay. Warm, glowing cheeks and earth-tone eye shadow rule the daytime and reign in the school halls. Bright red lips and voluptuous eyelashes sing to early Hollywood glamour for special occasions and evening outings.
Top it off
To match the earthy feel this fall, shirts and blouses also reflect the laid-back and eco-friendly style. Loose and delicate peasant blouses are sure to turn heads. Embroidery and soft gathers on sleeves and at necklines are eye-catching details.
Also, inspiration from nature plays heavily into the designs on T-shirts for teens across the Top of Utah. Feathers, Native American prints and eco-friendly sayings are abundant on not only T-shirts but also on blouses.
Soft cardigans and tailored blazers play a role, too, giving a relaxed outfit a little more of a controlled and structured feel. An unlikely competitor this season is lace, along with flowing, Aober-girly tops. The combination of the soft gentleness of lace, satin and organza is the perfect offset to the casual and earthy feel of this fall's fashions
Light as a feather
Every girl knows that a blouse and jeans do not make a complete outfit -- accessories are a must for every occasion. In keeping with the earthy vibes, feathers are all the rage. Whether they're in your hair as an extension, on your ears in earrings or around your neck, it's impossible to go wrong with a little help from our feathered friends!
Feathers in the hair, long, thin and a shade or two off from your natural hair color are spot on. Not sure about a long term commitment? Talk to your hair stylist about clip-in feather extensions. For earrings and necklaces, peacock or wispy statement feathers combined with delicate chains and charms make any outfit girly and fun.
Bag it up
Where would any woman be without her purse? Purses this fall are big, leather and simple. Fun colors like yellow, purple and red are perfect for going grocery shopping, hanging with friends, or going to school.
Satchels with plenty of pockets and in fun colors are ideal for this season's natural look. Not only that, but with all the room in these big bags, you'll be able to ditch that time-worn backpack while making a fashion-forward statement.
