OGDEN -- Grantsville remained the team with the trophy in Region 11 girls tennis action, but the perrenial champs face a stiff challenge at every division.
Following two days of play at Ogden High and Mount Ogden Park, the the Cowboys added to their overall margin in the league championships. On Thursday, Grantsville posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
Ogden's dynamic doubles teams powered the Tigers to second place, followed by Morgan and Bear River.
At No. 1 singles, Grantsville's Taylor Orgill battled past Bear River's Courtney Comstock, 6-3, 6-1, for the title.
At No. 2 singles, Ogden's Marie Rasmussen topped Grantsville's Rachel Rupp, 6-5, 6-4, for first place.
At No. 3 singles, Grantsville's Katelin Christensen defeated Morgan's Ashlee Earl, 6-3, 6-3, for the title.
In doubles action, Ogden's Meredith Tribe and Abbey Anjewierden whipped their Grantsville opponents, 6-2, 6-0, to repeat as No. 1 doubles winners.
At No. 2 doubles, Emily Sheffield and Tessa Welsh of Ogden dispatched Morgan's Seanna Thornton and Whitney Morgan, 6-4, 6-2, for the title.
The top entries in each division now prepare for the state 3-A championships, set for Oct. 7-8 at Brighsm Young University.
* REGION 5 CHAMPIONSHIPS: Following Thursday's opening rounds, the semifinals and finals will be staged beginning at 10 a.m. at Ogden High and Mount Ogden Park.
