Man arrested for DUI after 6-year-old girl struck

DUCHESNE -- A 44-year-old man is in jail after officials say he hit and critically injured a 6-year-old girl in Duchesne while driving under the influence.

The Utah Highway Patrol says the man was driving home from work in Vernal about 7:30 p.m. Thursday when he hit the girl in a crosswalk.

Joseph Mitchell Pantos of Highland was arrested on charges of felony DUI, driving on a suspended license, possession of a drug in a school zone, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Authorities say he was not driving over the speed limit and applied his brakes when the girl was struck.

A woman who answered the phone at Pantos' home said she didn't know if he had an attorney.
