Prep football: Lakers shut out Royals, 13-0

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- In the latest edition of great games between rivals Roy and Bonneville, the host Lakers took advantage of a couple of Royals' turnovers and turn them into a 13-0 homecoming victory Friday night in Region 5 action.

"The past two weeks have been tough on us," Bonneville coach Randy Johnson said. "We played two tough teams up there (in Cache Valley) and we didn't have our full complement of players because they were banged up. We were kind of able to get back on track tonight, but we still have some things to work on to get better.

"One of the things that is so hard for anyone is trying to game plan for (Roy coach) Freddie (Fernandez)," Johnson added. "He schemes better than anyone I know because you have to take into account all the things he can do."

The teams battled back and forth with neither gaining an advantage. Playing mostly between the 20-yard lines, each team had a chance to score in both the first and second quarters, but failed to convert.

Bonneville opened the scoring just a couple of minutes before the half when kicker Carson Fackrell booted a 54-yard field goal to give the lead to the Lakers at 3-0 heading into the locker room.

Fackrell was at it again to start the third quarter as he knocked home a 33-yarder to increase the lead at 6-0. With things looking bleak, the Royals turned to the passing game and drive down the field.

However, a costly penalty moved them back and forced Roy to go for it on fourth down, which they failed to convert on.

Time and time though, the Royals defense was up to the task and gave themselves one more chance to take the lead with five minutes left.

After Roy failed to convert a final fourth down, Bonneville's Beck Nelson scored from a yard out with 45 seconds left.

The teams finished nearly dead even in offensive production on the night with Bonneville's Chase Nelson leading the way with 63 yards rushing.
