1 dead in W. Jordan plane crash

WEST JORDAN -- Authorities say one man is dead and another man critically injured after a small airplane crashed in a soccer field just south of a West Jordan airport.

Police say the kit-built experimental aircraft with two aboard had just taken off from South Valley Regional Airport about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses reported seeing the plane struggle to gain altitude before diving nose-first into the grass and shattering into pieces.

West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders says one of the plane's occupants died on the scene. Another man was taken to an area hospital in extremely critical condition. Authorities have not released their names but say they are in their 30s or 40s and from central Utah.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground.
