OGDEN — A 2-year-old boy died Tuesday afternoon after he fell out of his mother’s sport utility vehicle, which ran him over.
Ogden Police Lt. Tony Fox said Monica Navarez was driving south on Monroe Boulevard at the intersection with 24th Street when, at 1:21 p.m., Dallas Martinez apparently got out of his car seat.
The boy moved from his spot on the driver’s side of the backseat, past his 3-year-old sister, opened the rear passenger door and fell out of the moving white Isuzu Rodeo, Fox said.
The mother came to a stop almost immediately after he fell out because she heard the car door open, but he was run over by the SUV, Fox said.
Melinda Martinez, no relation, said her daughter was nearby when the accident happened.
Relating what her daughter told her, Melinda Martinez said Navarez picked up her son and, from the sidewalk at the southwest corner of the intersection, cried for help as she held him in her arms.
Pedestrians around the intersection, including those at a nearby bus stop, started making calls on their phones, Melinda Martinez said.
“His eyes were opening and closing” as his mother cried, Melinda Martinez related. She added that her daughter did not know if the boy had died, only that “he had a lot of blood on him.”
The boy had suffered head, leg, pelvic and internal injuries, Fox said. He died at the scene.
Fox said the boy’s body will be examined by the state medical examiner to determine if he died from injuries suffered when he fell out or when he was hit. Navarez’s 3-year-old daughter was not injured.
Once police have completed their investigation, the case will be screened by the county attorney’s office for possible charges.
