2nd man dies after West Jordan small plane crash

WEST JORDAN -- Authorities say a second man has died after a small kit-built airplane crashed in a soccer field just south of a West Jordan airport.

West Jordan police said Wednesday that the crash about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday killed 28-year-old pilot Jared Despain of Nephi, and 40-year-old passenger Brent Simmons of Manti.

Witnesses say the aircraft had just taken off from South Valley Regional Airport and was struggling to gain altitude before diving nose-first into the grass and shattering into pieces.

Police spokesman Sgt. Drew Sanders says Simmons died on the scene. Despain was taken to an area hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground.
