Provo lifts ban on Sunday beer sales

PROVO -- The City Council has repealed an ordinance blocking Sunday beer sales in this Utah County community.

The council repealed the ordinance by a 5-1 vote Tuesday.

The Daily Herald of Provo (http://bit.ly/pQaOU8) reports Councilwoman Cynthia Dayton was the lone dissenting voice.

The ordinance must be signed by the mayor before it becomes effective.

Council Executive Director Matthew Taylor says he expects Sunday beer sales to begin on Oct. 16.

Residents expressed split opinions on the issue prior to Tuesday's vote. Some encouraged lifting the Sunday sales ban for economic and personal reasons. Others said the change wasn't necessary.

Councilmembers said most residents wanted the ordinance repealed even though many are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and don't drink alcohol.
