6 Utah Tongan Crip Gang members convicted

SALT LAKE CITY -- A federal court jury has convicted six members of Utah's Tongan Crip Gang on charges related to a string of violent robberies.

The Thursday night verdict in the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City followed two days of jury deliberations and a nearly five-week trial.

The men were among 17 suspected TCG members indicted in June 2010 on nearly 30 racketeering, assault, carjacking, robbery and weapons charges stemming from robberies between 2003 and 2008.

Five men have resolved their cases through plea agreements. Four are set for trial in February 2012.

A seventh man was acquitted on Thursday. An eighth case was dismissed and not considered by the jury.

All six people convicted Thursday will face federal prison time at sentencing hearings in December and January.
