Prep tennis: Champions crowned on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY -- For the Davis Darts, close isn't bad but it's not quite what they wanted.

Region 1 champion Davis battled Lone Peak and Alta for the top sports in state 5-A girls tennis action on Saturay, but it was the Knights and Hawks who tied for the titles, with the Darts a close third.

Following action that dodged rain storms and cool weather Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Alta and Lone Peak tallied 17 points, with Davis at 12.

Davis' Brianna Turley cruised through the No. 2 singles bracket for a championship, topping Cottonwood's Sarah Sturt, 6-3, 6-0.

For the rest of the Darts, who went undefeated in Region 1 play, the second and third rounds proved to be tough. Davis' Alexis Turley staged a hard-fought semifinal battle with eventual No. 1 singles champion Kallie Sperry of Jordan, losing 6-3, 7-6(7-2).

The Darts' Lizzy Bell and Kira Sparks fell in the No. 1 doubles semifinals, while teammates Kenzie Nuttall and Kendall Sargent lost in the quarters at No. 2 doubles.

Fremont's DustyLee Kimber won her opening match at No. 3 singles before falling. A handful of Viewmont girls advanced to Saturday's action before losing out.

4-A championships

At Liberty Park, Skyline was dominant from start to finish, rolling to 24 points with Bountiful and Woods Cross second with 12 points each.

Woods Cross' Kate Cowley and Mel Low won the No. 1 doubles title, while the Wildcats' Megan Bell and Lauren Bretzing won at No. 2 doubles.

First-round winners included Box Elder's Michelle Braithwaite at No. 1 singles, Bonneville's Hailey Daniels at No. 3 singles, and the Lakers' Marquel Scharmann and Maren Conolly at No. 1 doubles.

3-A championships

At BYU, the 3-A tournament was pushed back to a Saturday start, so the semifinals and finals will be played Monday at 11 a.m. at Timpanogos High School.

Ogden's doubles duos of Abbey Anjewierden and Meredith Tribe and Emily Sheffield and Tessa Welsh cruised into the semifinals with a pair of wins on Saturday.

Bear River's Courtney Comstock had an opening win at No. 1 singles, as did Morgan's Ashlee Earl at No. 3 singles and the Trojans' Seanna Thornton and Whitney Morgan at No. 2 doubles.
