The state girls soccer tournaments jump into action this afternoon, with the top teams angling for an appearance later this month at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Region 1 will send four squads into the state 5-A bracket, with Davis and Fremont earning home games after tying for the league title, and Northridge and Weber facing big road battles this afternoon.
Region 2 champion Viewmont is also one of the top teams in the 5-A ranks. The Vikings reached the title game a year ago before falling to Brighton.
Region 5 champion Bonneville is one of two Top of Utah schools to bear the defending champ label -- St. Joseph is the other -- but the young Lakers appear equal to the task.
Bonneville will host Herriman this afternoon. Sky View, Mountain Crest and Box Elder will also battle for wins, along with Clearfield, making its first state tournament appearance in about 10 seasons.
The Falcons play at Timpanogos this afternoon. Bountiful and Woods Cross also earned 4-A berths. 4-A and 5-A winners will move on to Thursday's quarterfinals.
Ogden has enjoyed a loss-free Region 11 campagin, and will host Desert Hills when state 3-A play begins on Wednesday. Bear River, Ben Lomond and Morgan will also take their chances at the state level. Wednesday's winners will play in Saturday's quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at host schools.
At the 2-A level, the St. Joseph Jayhawks draw a bye in the first round, and will play the winner of Wednesday's Liahona-Richfield matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. St. Joseph is the defending state champ.
Mr. 300
When Skyline defeated Westlake 24-6 last Friday in Region 7 football action, it marked the 300th career win for Eagles coach Roger Dupaix.
Royals party
Roy High will honor its 1981 state championship football squad as part of Friday's Roy-Mountain Crest football game at Durbano Field.

Junior softball
The Weber School District will hold its junior high girls softball championship game on Thurdsay at Weber State's new softball field.
Rocky Mountain hosts Sand Ridge and Wahlquist hosts T.H. Bell today in the district semifinals. The winning squads will will play for the championship at 3:30 p.m. at WSU's softball complex next to the Dee Events Center. The cost for the game is free for students with IDs, $2 for all others.
