OGDEN -- Members of the community have an opportunity to help people with disabilities have jobs, while at the same time enjoying an entertaining lunch Thursday.
The event, which features lunch prepared by Ogden chefs and a comedy show by Keith Stubbs, owner of Ogden's Wiseguys Comedy Club, is the annual Laughs and Lunch at the Ogden Marriott Hotel in support of EnableUtah.
Participation in this year's event is being encouraged by Ogden-Weber Chamber President Dave Hardman.
Hardman said when people, whatever their challenges, receive assistance in finding employment, it creates a good environment and helps develop a sense of self-worth.
Hardman went so far to encourage the event this year that he signed his first-ever proclamation as chamber president.
Organizers of the annual event use rubber ducks to advertise it. In conjunction with that theme, Hardman signed a tongue-in-cheek proclamation naming Thursday "Rubber Duckie Day" in Ogden.
"We encourage all citizens to celebrate the Rubber Duckie and have a good laugh," Hardman wrote in the proclamation, which quotes all of the words to Ernie the Muppet's song on Sesame Street, "Rubber Duckie, you're the one."
Hardman said he has personal reasons to believe in people with disabilities.
For years, he said, he and his wife have served as leaders of a special-needs mutual group for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"I'm amazed at how fast they can grow, given an opportunity in a nonthreatening environment," he said of those with special needs.
Tickets for the lunch are $25. Those who wish to attend should call EnableUtah today at 801-452-8120 or 801-452-8123.
Lunch runs in two sessions, from 11 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Ogden Marriott is at 247 24th St.
