Prep soccer: Wolves move on

PLAIN CITY -- Nobody gives you an extra game at state; you have to earn it.

A handful of area girls soccer teams earned quarterfinal round games with sterling performances in Tuesday's opening round action.

Fremont was locked in a tooth-and-nail battle with Jordan, with the score tied at 1-1 late in regulation when the Silver Wolves' Mikell Minnoch blasted in the game-winning goal to secure the 2-1 victory.

"Neither team wanted to go to overtime and settle it that way," Fremont assistant Fred Smith said. "Both defenses were so strong. The girls played very hard today."

The Beetdiggers opened the scoring on Krisna Arndt's shot off the post in the 15th minute, but the host Silver Wolves answered eight minutes later when Chansi Crompton sent a corner kick into the fray that Shaylee Baird headed into the top corner of the goal.

Both teams pressured the ball throughout the contest, and with about four minutes to play, Fremont's Felicia Terry set up Minnoch's shot with a nice pass.

Keeper Elizabeth Hales and the rest of the Fremont defense kept Jordan off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

"They had a couple of opportunities, and it was a close game to the end," Smith said. "We told the girls this is where you earn that extra playoff game."

Fremont will move on to play at Lone Peak on Thursday afternoon.
