Prep volleyball: Trojans clinch at least a tie for title

GARLAND -- The Trojans did it again.

To no one's surprise, Morgan High clinched no less than a tie for yet another league volleyball title with a road sweep of Da Bears.

The defending state 3-A champion Trojans spanked Bear River 25-12, 25-13, 25-14 on Tuesday.

Morgan (18-5 overall) is 10-0 in a newly-aligned, seven-team Region 11 with two league matches remaining.

The Trojans host Tooele on Friday, and then Ogden on Oct. 18 in their Region 11 finale.

"Winning region never gets old," Morgan coach Liz Wiscombe said. "It's a goal that you have, and if you win region you get a good seeding at the state tournament. Plus, a true competitor never likes to lose."

Morgan dropped a three-gamer to Desert Hills on Saturday in the gold bracket championship match of the Utah Classic tournament at West High.

"These kids work hard to be where they are; they never take winning for granted," Wiscombe said. "They practice hard and they play hard."

The Trojans' Bailey Farris had 18 kills and five solo blocks. Kristi Rhead had two kills and three solo blocks; Katie Peterson had two kills and nine service points; Cassidee Lish had two kills and six digs; Mckenzie Schenk had three kills; setter Ashlee Gallen had 20 assists, three aces and 16 service points; and libero Jaesee Dye had 11 digs, four aces and 13 service points for Morgan.

"The three seniors (Farris, Gallen and Dye) provide good leadership. They are very competitive and work hard at practice," Wiscombe said. "When Bailey went out, everybody had to step it up. Now that she is back, that makes us better.

"Bailey had a staph infection in her right knee, and she is probably 95 percent now," Wiscombe said. "I will take Bailey at 95 percent any time. Luckily, these good middle blockers keep showing up on our doorstep.

"I can't say enough good things about this team," she said. "They play with a lot of passion, and I'm having fun coaching this year.

"Early on, we didn't play with any passion and now it has just turned around. The kids are back and ready to go," Wiscombe said. "We're hoping for another good run at state, and we have four matches (non-league matches versus Skyline and defending state 5-A champion Lone Peak) before the 3-A tournament."
