86-year-old man struck, killed by TRAX train

MURRAY -- Police say an 86-year-old man from Midvale was hit and killed by a lightrail train in Murray.

Unified Police detective Shane Manwaring says a train struck the man just after 8 a.m. Monday. His name has not yet been released.

Witnesses told investigators the man parked his car west of the Utah Transit Authority TRAX lines and then got out and stood between the tracks.

That was just before the safety alarms rang and security gates at the crossing came down. He was then struck by a southbound commuter train.

Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

Manwaring says the train's engineer was unable to stop. Trains typically travel at about 45 mph.

Police and transit officials are investigating.
