PLEASANT VIEW -- Council members approved an amendment to the Pleasant View Policies and Procedures Manual so that it will now designate elected officials as part-time employees. As such, they will not receive retirement benefits.
"The state Legislature has passed some new laws relative to the state retirement system," said City Administrator J.J. Allen. "This is one of those little details we have to take care of."
Allen said Pleasant View does not have a full-time mayor or council members; however, Mayor Doug Clifford will be grandfathered in, meaning he will still receive payments into a retirement plan, but any future mayor will not. The retirement payments for Clifford will continue as long as he is the elected mayor.
"The elected officials that take office in January, this new policy will apply to them," said Allen.
"It is a rather meager amount," said Clifford. "This is something there is not a whole lot of choice on -- the state said change the policy."
Council members voted unanimously to approve the amendment.
