Utah launches fallen officer alert system

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah is launching a spin-off of the Amber Alert with a new system to notify the public when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff announced the Blue Alert on Monday as a way to get the word out about potentially dangerous suspects on the loose. Notifications will come through electronic highway signs, media releases, text messages and emails.

Blue Alert is modeled after the Amber Alert system that notifies people about kidnapping suspects and victims. Shurtleff said Amber Alerts are effective to garner tips from the public and save lives.

Officials say Utah is now one of 10 states with an alert for fallen officers. They say six more states have pending legislation for a Blue Alert.
