Central Utah coal mine eliminates 114 jobs

WELLINGTON -- Operators of the Dugout Canyon coal mine near Wellington have announced the elimination of 114 jobs amid weakened demand for coal in the region.

The Canyon Fuel subsidiary of Arch Coal told the Deseret News the layoffs are coming as production has been scaled back at the Carbon County mine.

The company says it will provide affected employees with 60 days of wages and benefits as well as a severance package. Relocation assistance also is available to Dugout employees who land company jobs in other states.

Company officials say they hope to retain most of the employees by offering them positions at other mines.

They say while the Dugout mine is reducing production at this time, it could step up production again in the future if market conditions improve.
