Thunderbirds edge Wildcats in four sets

OGDEN -- Junior outside attacker Bethany Wray had 20 kills and eight digs to lead the Weber State volleyball team against in-state rival Southern Utah, but the Wildcats came up short in four sets against the Thunderbirds.

Led by Analaine Mailoto's 14 kills and 12 digs, Southern Utah topped Weber State 25-17, 25-18, 18-25, 25-23 on Monday night at Swenson Gym.

Wray and Mailoto, formerly Annalaine Peleaz, were former high school teammates at Fremont High School.

Sophomore outside attacker Briana Wilms and junior middle blocker Dama Cox each added nine kills for Weber State, while junior setter Caitlin Penrod had 39 assists.

All four sets were tightly contested, with the Thunderbirds pulling away late in the first and second sets and the Wildcats doing likewise in the third.

The fourth set was a fierce battle to the wire, with Weber State rallying to knot the match at 23-all.

Southern Utah, however, made the final two plays to earn the two-point set win and take the match.

Weber State will be back in action on Friday night against Northern Arizona at Swenson Gym. First serve against the Lumberjacks is set for 6 p.m.
