BOUNTIFUL -- A 49-year-old man was critically injured Thursday when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle.
Steven Manning appeared to have walked out onto Orchard Drive in Bountiful around 7:15 p.m., intending to cross from the north side of the residential street to the south side, said Bountiful Police Sgt. Gary Koehn. But as he stepped out into the street near 300 West, a woman in an SUV hit him, Koehn said.
The SUV had been traveling east on the street, and the driver told police she didn't see Manning before the impact. Manning was taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Koehn said he believed Manning was in stable condition.
Police did not have a chance to talk to Manning late Thursday night. Police believe he lives in the Salt Lake City area and do not know why he was in Bountiful.
Any citations or charges against the woman who hit him, who Koehn said was shaken up after the accident, are pending investigation.
