Family, dog rescued in remote Mantua; vehicle stranded

MANTUA -- A family and their dog were rescued from a mountain Friday night, but their sports-utility vehicle is still stranded.

A father, son, son's wife and dog drove up to an area called Three Mile that is meant for all-terrain vehicles, not their Ford Explorer, said Box Elder County Sheriff's Deputy Lynn Yates. Three Mile is east of Mantua.

By 8 p.m. the family reached a padlocked U.S. Forest Service gate they could not get past. They could not go back the way they came either because of the terrain.

Yates and his search and rescue team drove their ATVs up the mountain and brought the family and dog safely down by 10:30 p.m.

But their Explorer is still on the mountain. Yates said they will have to retrieve it, but he was not sure when or how they would since it may be hard to get a tow truck up there as well.
