LAYTON -- Police arrested a man they say attempted to kidnap and assault a woman in a gym early Monday morning.
Lt. Garret Atkin said officers arrested Randy Jess Inman, 25, of Layton, late Monday afternoon. He is charged with first-degree felony kidnapping.
Atkin said he did not know where police found Inman, but they had been looking for him all day.
According to the warrant for his arrest, which also was filed in 2nd District Court, Inman lunged after a woman inside Snap Fitness, 781 E. Gordon Ave.
The two were the only people in the gym at 4:30 a.m.
A surveillance video shows Inman wrapping both of his arms around the woman, picking her up and dragging her across the gym toward the bathroom.
"The victim is kicking, scratching, screaming and fighting to break free from Randy's grasp," according to the warrant.
The woman kicked herself free of Inman and then hid between two free-standing tanning beds, according to the warrant.
She pleaded with Inman to let her go, and Inman said he would, but as she left, he lunged after her again, according to the document.
The woman then grabbed her cellphone and threatened to call 911, and he attempted to grab the phone from her. But then he backed away, which gave her time to leave the gym, the document states.
Atkin said a policeman stopped Inman outside the gym at 5:30 a.m. because he was acting suspiciously, but Inman was released because no report of a kidnapping had yet been filed.
The woman later went to police and reported the kidnapping and picked Inman's photograph from a photo lineup.
