Syracuse officer receives award

SYRACUSE -- Syracuse police officer James Nielson has been recognized by the Davis Board of Health for his outstanding efforts in enforcing tobacco laws, particularly with minors. The board presented Nielson, who is the school resource officer at Syracuse High School, with an award Nov. 8.

The youths found in violation of the law are required to attend cessation classes at the health department, and to complete these classes they are required to write a paper on how tobacco use has affected them, said Davis County Health Family Health & Senior Services Division Director Sally Kershisnik.

Many of the youths who attend the classes are referred there by Nielson, she said.
