Football Friday: Logan comes from behind to win state 4-A football title

SALT LAKE CITY -- Logan QB D.J. Nelson hit Jameson Hartman with a 40-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass with less than 40 seconds to play to pace the Grizzlies to a thrilling 18-11 victory over East in the state 4-A football championship game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The 4-A finale was the first of three championships to be decided today. Region 1 champion Fremont meets Lone Peak in the 5-A title game at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Hurricane-Desert Hills matchup in the 3-A finale.

Both teams played strong defense in the first half, trading early field goals. Nelson ran in from a 1 yard out before halftime, while East answered with a Gavin Van Minde field goal just before the break.

Logan led 10-6 at halftime.

East scored a safety in the third quarter, then took the lead on Van Minde's third field goal.

Logan (14-0) had two scoring chances after East (13-2) went ahead. The first ended when Jake Thompson's 51-yard field goal came up short. The second resulted in the the winning TD.
