Prep cross country: Darts, Tiger trio reach Nike Nationals

A group of Davis High and Ogden High runners extended their season for another month, earning sports in the Nike Nationals cross country competition with solid qualifying runs last weekend.

Ogden's Sarah Feeny and Jamie Stokes finished in the top 10 of Saturday's Nike Southwest Regional race on Saturday morning in Mesa, Ariz., and along with Orem runner Summer Harper, will represent Utah at the prestigious Nike Nationals.

On the boys side, American Fork and Davis continued their storied rivalrly outside the state's borders, and will do so again at nationals.

The Darts' Brad Nye led his squad to a national berth, while American Fork placed three runners in the top 10 to finish first.

Ogden's Jordon Cross will also make the trip to Portland, Ore. for the Dec. 1-4 race weekend with a top-10 finish.

Ogden's girls squad finished fifth overall in Saturday's elite race, topping other Utah schools like Davis, Skyline and Mountain View.

Not bad for team that finished second at the state 3-A championships in October.

"I really admire the girls for stepping up and overcoming their disappointment at state," Ogden coach Don Hall said.

At the encouragement of coach Alydia Barton, Feeny jumped out to the front of the pack and led the girls race in the early going. She finished in 17:46 over the 3.1-mile course.

Stokes, Ogden's lone senior, had a battle in the final stretch to earn one of the final qualifying sports, finishing at 17:57.

The other scoring runners for Ogden were Melissa Garrett, Hannah Allred, Sara Mathewson, Jessica Sams, and Aubrey Barton.

The Darts were led by Joanna Boyd, who was 26th in 18:48. Other scoring runners were Madison Garlock, Shea Martinez, Ashley Tyndall, Kamie Dixon, Chelsey Johnson and Becca Albrechtsen.

Harper ran second to winner Erin Hooker, finishing in 17:42.55.

While American Fork and Davis ran 1-2 in the boys race, Ogden's young boys squad leared from its national experiend.

Cross ran in 15:29 to earn an at-large qualifying bid. Ogden's other scoring runners were Justin Sheets, Pedro Deleon, Mike Buckley, and Carson Garner.

American Fork's Clayton Young ran third overall, with teammate Braden Mclelland fourth and Mackenzie Morrison seventh.

Davis' Brad Nye in 15:25.7 to finish sixth overall behind winner Luis Marinez (15:08.80).

Other scoring runners for American Fork were Connor McMillan, Tyson Green, Zac Jacklin and Dallas Griswold.

The Darts' Preston Johnson ran in 15:35.12, with Brayden Cromar in 15:47.75. They were followed by Logan Wood (15:57.30), Skylar Williams (16:00.70), Alex Hedquist (16:21.38) and Hayden Hansen (16:28.26).

Bonneville finished 22nd as a team, paced by Andrew Penman, who ran in 16:37.16. Other scoring runners for the Lakers were Colby Wayment, Colby Myers, Cadence Perry, Abram Weeks, Brock Tomisin and Brian Jasper.
